Sentinel Apartment – Helical Staircase

Suspended in the penthouse of Takapuna’s Sentinel tower, this helical staircase is a bold architectural statement — combining sculptural form, structural precision, and refined detailing. Rising within a luxury residence over 100 metres above ground, the stair features a fully self-supporting steel structure with no central column, showcasing the clean geometry of the helix.

The treads are finished with carpet and steel risers, while integrated LED lighting casts a soft, ambient glow along the ascent. At level 1, the stair is bordered by a custom 8mm steel balustrade, fabricated in a striking pattern of squares and rectangles and powder-coated to harmonise with the interior.

A concealed fire sprinkler system was seamlessly integrated into the stair void — a technical challenge requiring close collaboration across trades. All components were craned to the top floor and installed with millimetre precision.

This project reflects the intersection of complex engineering and bespoke design — a sculptural centrepiece in an extraordinary setting.
